Stage 3 Workshops

We’re now working with a smaller group of 9 children from Hunter’s Bar Junior School. The children, aged 7-8 yrs, are making interactive art and games using the Scratch programming language.

This is the third stage of the Avatars project which goes behind the scenes of character based interactive entertainment and digital media. The children love these hands-on workshops which tap into their enthusiasm for character based computer games and uses this as the motivation to explore the some of the principles of computer programming in a creative, playful environment. They all followed a structured course of instructions to make a game called ‘Keepy Uppy’, where their Avatars have to try and keep a ball in the air for as long a possible. They were very quickly customising the basic code we gave them, adding their own background artwork and sounds along with variables to control the ball speed and score points. Now they are coming up with their own ideas for interactive projects.
