The late great Janet Ahlberg could create an enchantingly believable face from little more than a subtle blush of colour and two dots. Dots are powerful, but their position is crucial: Quentin Blake has described how, in his early days as an illustrator, he would make a dot on a tiny piece of paper and move it around with a pin to find exactly the right place.
